Catalyzing the global movement for public-interest AI.

Alongside a trailblazing partnership of governments, philanthropists, industry leaders, and grassroots builders, we’re reorienting AI in service of people over profit.

Mainstream narratives position AI as a profiteering and threatening force, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

We believe that when aligned builders join up, we can create a global, collective and collaborative vision for AI. One that is not governed by any one company or country.

Countless initiatives are already harnessing AI’s potential to make a real impact, both globally and in local communities. But the organizations and governments behind these efforts largely operate in isolation, leaving momentum and impact on the table. True AI sovereignty and resilience doesn’t mean owning the full stack alone: that isn't feasible, or necessary.

We are uniting our collective work to build a fully open, global, interoperable AI stack designed to put people first, without compromise.

Who we are

Current AI is a first-of-its-kind global partnership founded to build a viable alternative to proprietary AI.

Designed as a hybrid organization working between the worlds of philanthropy, tech, and government, we have over $400 million in funds already committed, and we’re mobilizing $2.5 billion over five years.

How We Work

We are rewiring the public-interest AI space by funding and connecting aligned changemakers, and by investing in resilient, collaborative infrastructure to push all of our work forward.

We fund what the market won't.

Our grantees are changemakers building the vital tools that otherwise won’t get done, for and with local communities. Our funding centers transparency, cross-pollination, and community ownership.

We build the viable alternative.

Through a coordinated global effort, we will build the full stack of public Interest AI, from hardware to applications so that it becomes a viable alternative and a sandbox for a collective vision for AI. And everything is designed to be open, accessible, and auditable.

We bridge the global movement.

We nurture the movement by investing in shared resources and infrastructure, and by bringing aligned parties to the table so we can all take action together. Our goal is ambitious, but it is within reach if we work together as a community.

The AI we shape today will shape us tomorrow.

Current AI's global political momentum is building.

We must ensure that artificial intelligence bridges the gap between developed and developing countries and not widen it. Today's launch of Current AI, a public interest partnership, is an important contribution.
